    ‘Non-credible threats’ Chemung County Sheriff debunks school shooting threats

    ELMIRA, N.Y. ( WETM ) — Chemung County Sheriff, William Schrom, released a statement on Monday responding to the public regarding a series of threats that were posted to social media regarding a possible shooting at several schools.

    Sheriff Schrom confirmed Monday afternoon, Sept. 16, that the Snapchat threats made and posted to social media have been investigated and found to be non-credible threats regarding a school shooting.

    Concerned residents started placing calls around 11:25 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, reporting a social media post that was threatening a school shooting at the Elmira City School District on Monday and Tuesday.

    Residents warned of possible FEMA scams in Northern Tier Counties

    The Snapchat image was posted across numerous social media groups throughout the day raising concern for parents and students. Police said that the threats evolved to include other schools in Broome County and Tompkins County.

    An investigation revealed that these threats may be related to a swatting hoax circulating throughout many counties and nationwide.

    Police encourage parents to speak to their children about these types of incidents and the importance of see something say something.
