Now open: Recreation at Shadow Pines in Penfield

PENFIELD, N.Y. (WROC) — Pickleball courts and other amenities are now open at the old Shadow Pines golf course in Penfield.

The town celebrated with a ribbon cutting, and now in the north parcel — on a total of seven acres — are these amenities:

• 10 pickleball courts
• 2 inclusive playgrounds
• A picnic area
• Walking trails
• An open air pavilion and restrooms

In 2018, the town bought the land to keep it a “passive recreation space.” In the summer of 2023, the town unveiled updated plans for the parcel after extensive community feedback. Those were approved, and construction started in 2024.

Tuesday, the town supervisor of Penfield, Jeff Leenhouts, invited the community to enjoy these amenities and said this was the best use of the space.

“There’s a balance between open space, commercial, residential, but this can be a great amenity. The residents are going to love it, and we need to take care of it and maintain it,” he said.

Leenhouts was non-committal on possible futures of the rest of the land, but hinted that people enjoy the passive recreation and there are “a lot of ideas out there.”
