ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall as a major hurricane. Over seven million people have been asked to evacuate that live closer to the ocean. However, Nancy Campbell, who is a Fairport native, did not fall under that category.

“We’re lucky that we are about 40 feet above sea level in Lakewood Ranch. So, we are not in a zone risk area and we’re not even in an evacuation zone. We are outside of that because we are 16 miles east of the ocean,” says Campbell.

When she decided that she was not going to evacuate, she knew that her preparations needed to be done at least a few days before the hurricane hit.

“Our preparations started last week with making sure we had enough food and gas,” Campbell says. “We do have some batteries and we have an emergency radio and stuff of that nature.”

Although losing power is a concern for many, Nancy says that they will be okay if they do lose power.

“Because we have the storm screens, we can see out, so light is not a big issue during the day if we don’t have power,” she says.

After all of her preparations were done, Nancy sat back and took a deep breath, knowing what she and other Floridians are unfortunately about to encounter.

“All of our neighbors, their houses are either shuttered with the aluminum shutters or with the screen shutters and we’re all taking care of each other really,” says Campbell. “That’s it. We’re sitting here waiting and hoping for the best, really.”

Nancy puts emphasis on helping each other out, as some people have supplies that others may not. She continues to ask everyone that she talks with to keep her and all Floridians in their prayers.
