IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. ( WROC ) — Dressed in their summer clothes, the Eastridge High Lancers marching band has been working hard since July on an all new routine with some rock-and-roll flair. They’ve dedicated up to 16 hours a week to make sure this set is a showstopper.

“These kids are second to none when it comes to hard work, and it’s always been a tradition here at the Lancers band. The show has been a lot of fun. I think the kids really enjoy it, and that’s one of the main reasons why it’s been so successful,” says Band Director Jeff Hoffman.

“We really have cared about doing well these past few years and it’s really showing this year,” says the band’s conductor, Yadi Cunningham.

They’re certainly all in perfect sync. The band’s new Rolling Stones-themed show “Paint It Black” won them the Webster Autumn Fanfare on Saturday earning a total 84.4—higher than any other band they were up against. The last three competitions across the state have all gone the same way with each win also earning scores above any other band across all class levels.

They say they owe their success to their band community and the support that starts to feel like family.

“It’s just the people in marching band that like help you and like get to know you,” says Aria Carter, a trumpet player.

“I’m an alumni of the band myself. I graduated in 2001, and just to be able to come back here and help out in some regard and just feel the kids actually pushing us through practice instead of us having to drag them each time—I never leave here without a smile on my face,” adds Assistant Band Director Michael Simpson.

It’s certainly not easy to give up evenings and Saturdays to drill through all their notes, effects, and costume changes—juggling school work, friends and family all the way—but they add the thrill of each win is made sweeter by whom they stand next to and share it with.

“There’s something so powerful with music and being able to share with all the people I care about is just wonderful,” says Yadi.
