ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Rochester Police Department will be rolling out the “Leave Behind Naloxone” program.

The program is the result of a partnership with the Monroe County Health Department. This is a response to the multiple people who have died from opioid overdose.

According to RPD, the program will provide officers with Naloxone kits to disperse to high-risk individuals in the community. These include overdose survivors, people with a history of overdosing, high-risk users, and families and friends of overdose survivors.

“We always talk about the steps we are taking to save lives from violence, now we are taking this ambitious step to save lives from opioids,” said RPD Chief David Smith.

Inside each kit, there are two doses of Narcan, information on how to use it, harm reduction strategies, and resources to seek assistance.

The program and kit rollout will begin in early November, with a plan to implement it department-wide in February 2025.
