ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Since June 20 of this year, we have been slowly losing daylight. While it may have not been noticeable during the majority of the summer, we are certainly starting to see it now. With just 2 weeks left of daylight saving time, we will get to enjoy later sunset times, for now. But in two weeks from now, you can expect our sunsets to be much earlier.

    What is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight saving time is the period of time between the months of March and November when most Americans adjust their clocks ahead by one hour. When we “spring ahead” in March, it’s to add more daylight in the evenings. So, it’s the opposite when we “fall back” in November – we gain an hour to make for daylight in the mornings.

When did Daylight Saving Time begin this year?

Daylight saving time began in 2024 on Sunday, March 10 at around 2 am. This is when our clocks pushed forward an hour.

So, when does Daylight Saving Time end this year?

Daylight saving time will end for this year at around 2am on Sunday, November 3. During that night, you will gain an hour of sleep from our clocks “falling back.”

Does every state observe Daylight Saving Time?

Mostly, yes. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time. Due to its arid desert climate, Arizona opts out of daylight saving time, except for the Navajo Nation. Hawaii is the only other state that skips daylight saving time. Its location near the equator means there’s little variation in daylight hours throughout the year. There are also five other U.S. territories that do not particpate:

    • American Samoa
    • Guam
    • Northern Mariana Islands
    • Puerto Rico
    • U.S. Virgin Islands

What does this mean for WNY?

Basically, you can kiss the daylight goodbye. Okay, that’s an exaggeration. The amount of daylight we will see in a day will continue to get shorter and shorter until we reach the Winter Solstice, which falls on Saturday, December 21 of this year.
