BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Representatives from Tobacco-Free Broome Tioga recently met with state lawmakers to discuss their efforts and program needs.

Tobacco-Free Broome Tioga addressed its local accomplishments with the New York State Tobacco Control Program (TCP) with Assemblyman Joe Angelino, Senator Lea Webb, Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, and Senator Peter Oberacker. The group emphasized the significant risks faced by smoking and vaping while celebrating their success with decreased tobacco usage rates.

According to a report on the NYS TCP, for every $1 invested in tobacco control, New York saves $11. Since the program’s inception, the average adult smoking rate has dropped by nearly half, from 23.2% in 2001 to 12% in 2021. Additionally, the statewide average youth cigarette smoking rate dropped from 27.1% in 2000 to 2.1% in 2020.
