BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – With their win on Sunday, the Chenango Forks Blue Devils accomplished something in Girls Basketball that the program had never done before, win the Section 4 title.

“Yeah, it feels amazing,” Senior Alyssa Specchio said. “For years we’ve seen, up on that banner up there, 1990, and that was just for a division. And this year we really just wanted to get our year up there and it feels great to finally see it.”

Any time a team wins a first title in history, you know that group is special.

The work ethic and character were things the coaches noticed from this year’s team.

“These girls have really bought in,” Head Coach Mike Curtis said. “In the summertime, putting in a lot of extra time on themselves. Really just the level of practice. They kinda all feed off each other, and they’re just wonderful people to be around as well too.”

Of course, this group had to deal with challenges this year.

Including a 1 point loss in the STAC title game that taught them a lot.

“It showed us from the STAC final on out, no team was gonna be easy,” Senior Lexi Scott said. “Playing some team’s 3 times, and that we had to work hard, every game, every minute.”

Regardless of what happens going forward in the state tournament, this Blue Devils team can be proud of what they’ve done, making Chenango Forks history.

“When you can say, it’s the first time you’ve done something in school history, and 75, 80 years it’s been happening, they have that,” Curtis said. “So, they’ll definitely be proud I think down the road, and they’re certainly proud of themselves right now.”

The Blue Devils certainly can be proud of all they have accomplished this year, and they now have the chance to keep the season going.

It’s on to the state playoffs now, their next game, on Sunday at the Arena in the New York State regionals.

Chenango Forks will play Utica Notre Dame at 12 p.m., the winner advances to the state semifinals next week.
