BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – In her second year on the Varsity team, Chenango Forks Maggie Warpus led the Blue Devils to the Girls Basketball programs first Section 4 title in history.

Warpus has been voted as the Tioga State Bank, NewsChannel 34 Sports Winter MVP.

The sophomore was crucial to the team’s success, the improvements Warpus made from last season to this season allowed her and the team to take the next step.

“I think this year I definitely got a lot better at attacking the rim and then just finishing in the post,” Warpus said. “But also, just having that court vision and being able to see my team, wherever they are, is definitely one of the better parts of my game.”

It was not just on offense that Warpus made an impact, Head Coach Mike Curtis noted her defensive play as a key this season.

“You know we talked about the offensive end a lot,” Curtis said. “She’s a great shooter, great inside player, but I think her defensive presence for us this year really was her best of her leadership ability.”

One of the ways that Warpus leads this team is by example.

Her high level of work ethic then helps the team improve.

“You talk about great athletes being the first one in and the last one out and that’s Maggie,” Curtis said. “She’s the first one to practice, always wants extra shots after practice, always asking to get the shooting machine out at odd times during the night to come in and work on her game.”

All that work helped the Blue Devils win the title this year, something that is even better for Warpus because of the chemistry with her teammates.

“Just being able to play with all my friends,” Warpus said. “It’s all of my best friends that I play with so that’s definitely the best part.”

With 2 more seasons before graduation, Warpus can still accomplish a lot with the Blue Devils, and our Winter Sports MVP has some ideas about goals for next season.

“I definitely want to hit my 1000th point next year,” Warpus said. “That would be a big accomplishment and then getting another section 4 title would be really cool.”

More to accomplish for Warpus, even after her great 2023-24 season.

Congratulations to Maggie and the entire team on all they accomplished this season, the Class B champions of Section 4.
