Owego Treadway auctions off contents

OWEGO, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The public will have the opportunity to take home a piece of history as an Owego icon heads for demolition.

Mead and Sons Auctioneers is hosting a liquidation auction at the former Owego Treadway Conference Center on Saturday. Everything will be sold to the walls. Guests can bid on items such as six-foot crystal chandeliers, pianos, commercial kitchen equipment, banquet tables, and more.

The former banquet hall and its adjacent restaurant will soon be demolished to make room for an Aldi’s grocery store. However, the Owego Treadway Inn, which has been rebranded to a Quality Inn and Suites, will be retained.

Owner of Mead and Sons Jim Mead says no matter what age, everyone in Tioga County has made memories at the facility.

He says this is a very nostalgic event.

“I think it’s special because it really is a finality. It won’t be long, and we’ll drive by here and it won’t be here any longer. And it did have so much connection with the county. I remember there was great enthusiasm when it was first built and of course IBM was doing great guns then so there was more call for this type of facility. Time marches on,” said Mead.

The event will begin with a preview at 8 a.m. with the auction starting at 10.

Absentee bids can be made from now until the end of the event.
