BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – A state grant is helping the Ross Park Zoo be as welcoming as possible to everyone.

State Senator Lea Webb announced a 150 thousand dollar grant to help pay for renovations to the zoo’s central restroom facilities.

The area between the bathrooms and the administrative offices will be enclosed and the facilities expanded.

The new fully ADA compliant family restrooms will feature changing tables and areas for breast-feeding mothers.

The project builds upon other recent accessibility upgrades made at the zoo, including a 9 passenger electric shuttle.

Executive Director Phil Ginter says the zoo is also looking to break down financial barriers.

“This year, we recently joined the Museums for All initiative. Families or individuals who are receiving any kind of public assistance, if you present your benefit card when you visit the zoo, you can get admission for just $3,” he said.

Ginter says the zoo was recently the first location in Broome County certified by KultureCity as a sensory inclusive venue.

It offers sensory bags in the gift shop that include noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools and communication cards.
