Two hyena cubs born at Animal Adventure in April

HARPURSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) — So nice that it happened twice! Animal Adventure announced Wednesday the successful birth and care of a pair of hyena cubs back in April.

The two cubs were born on April 12 and 13 to their mother, Zuri; a 9-year-old spotted hyena who has now had five successful births. The first cub came out, and shockingly, Zuri gave birth again just 24 hours later which the park says is “very unusual.” She gave birth to a boy and a girl.

Not even a week after being born, the brother and sister combination began to play a little too rough with each other, so with the advice from veterinarians, the park separated the cubs from Zuri to begin a strict food and care schedule with the young hyenas.

“The survival rate of hyena cubs is generally low, and very few spotted hyena pairs in the U.S. are
successfully propagating. Animal Adventure is proud to be one of those facilities with a track record of success,” owner Jordan Patch said.

While these cubs are bound for another appropriate facility and will not be on exhibit at Animal
Adventure, they will make a special one-time appearance on Friday, May 24 at 1:30 p.m. during a
brief educational talk in our Children’s Zoo area.
