BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Local artists will once again have the chance show off their work during this year’s LUMA Projection Arts Festival.

The Peg Johnston Living Lights Project, formerly known as Mural Mapping, is returning to the festival.

Named after a prominent local art figure, the initiative allows individuals to submit their two-dimensional art which will later be displayed.

Children will also have the opportunity to participate in the project through the Urban League summer camp, the Discovery Center, and Congressman Marc Molinaro’s Think Differently campaign.

Co-founder of LUMA Joshua Bernard says the project gives local community artists a platform to share their talent.

“When we started LUMA we made a real effort because the community wanted to see world class artists come to Binghamton and create something that was totally Binghamton in Binghamton. And we’ve accomplished that goal but over the years we were concerned that that made LUMA a little bit less accessible to community artists that has lived her their entire lives and didn’t really have the chance to showcase their talents. So, this is really an effort to give those folks an opportunity to be a part of LUMA,” said Bernard.

This year’s art will be projected onto the old CVS building in downtown Binghamton.

Bernard says one of the coolest things about this project is the radically different interpretations people have of the facade of the building.

LUMA will be held on September 6 and September 7.

Those interested in participating can stop by Garland Gallery during business hours to pick up a template.

Templates and more information can also be found on lumafestival.com

Submissions are due no later than August 22.
