Young performers learn from resident artist at Glimmerglass

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Young artists at the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown are benefiting from the knowledge and mentorship of one of the world’s premier mezzo-sopranos.

Irish singer Tara Erraught is artist in residence this summer at Glimmerglass.

Erraught has been a freelance artist since just prior to the pandemic, performing at great opera houses around the world.

She says she jumped at the chance to come to Cooperstown this summer where she will perform the title role in the production of Elizabeth Cree.

“It moves at lightning pace, but it’s so well-written that it’s gone in a flash. You don’t even notice it. It’s 90 minutes, bang-bang-bang, it is absolutely brilliant. And it’s very palatable, you could absolutely listen to the music, it’s so beautiful. There’s so many tender moments, also some super action moments. Also, a little bit of show music in there, it’s a real mix of everything. Especially for somebody’s first opera, it’s a great one to come and see,” said Erraught.

Erraught has also been working with the company’s more than 40 young artists, coaching them in groups and individually.

“Everybody in this industry knows about the Young Artists program here. The legacy of the Young Artists program is very expansive. I would go so far as to say that up to 75% of the American singers that I meet on the circuit, are graduates of this Young Artists program here. It’s a big, impressive industry legacy,” said Erraught.

Erraught and members of the Young Artists program are putting on a concert of folk songs and popular tunes called Horizons tomorrow at 4:30 in the Thaw Pavilion.

There are two performances of Elizabeth Cree left, along with the other mainstage productions.
