Avelo’s final flights at Greater Binghamton Airport

BINGHAMTON, NY. (WIVT/WBGH) – There is sadness among regular Avelo fliers as the discount air carrier had its second-to-last flights to and from Orlando and Binghamton today.

The morning flight from Orlando arrived close to 11 a.m. and the flight out of Binghamton was scheduled to leave at 11:40.

Last month, Avelo announced that it is permanently terminating its flight service from Binghamton to Orlando International Airport. Avelo said data showed the Binghamton to Orlando route was not profitable, leading to the decision to cancel the services.

Greater Binghamton Airport officials expressed surprise at the move, saying they believed the flights to be very popular.

Regular passengers also took to social media to say that many of the flights they had taken were nearly full.

Mark and Patty Gardner of Endicott were taking their first flight to Orlando this morning to visit their son Greg who lives there before heading on a cruise to the Bahamas. They say Greg has used the service many times to come back to his hometown.

“He loves it. He flies home here to Endicott to visit us, and he just can’t get over the price is so wonderful. He’s used it often,” said Patty.

“We don’t go down that much, but Greg comes up, his family comes up. So now, an alternative. I don’t know, are we going to have to go to Syracuse or Elmira, who knows?” said Mark.

Avelo launched amid great fanfare in November of 2022, originally planning direct flights to both Orlando and Fort Myers, Florida. But the Fort Myers route was scrapped after Hurricane Ian ravaged the coastal city.

Then this past May, Avelo temporarily suspended its service for one month.

The final Avelo flights are scheduled for this Sunday. Its departure leaves the Greater Binghamton Airport with one flight to and from Detroit on Delta Airlines each day.
