MARATHON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – New York State Police are investigating a motor vehicle accident that claimed the life of one person and injured another.

On Thursday, at approximately 1:10 p.m., NYSP at Homer, the New York State Police Traffic Incident Management Unit, and New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 in Marathon.

During a preliminary investigation, it was determined that MD Sanzid Bin Rashid, 26, of Bronx, was traveling north on I-81 in a Honda SUV. Just north of the Marathon exit, traffic was slow due to construction and Rashid, who was in the right lane, swerved into the left lane to avoid stopped traffic. As a result, he struck a Toyota. Both the Honda and the Toyota went off the roadway and the Honda overturned, landing on its side.

The operator of the Toyota was a 71-year-old male from New Jersey. He did not survive the crash. A passenger in the Toyota, a 70-year-old female of New Jersey, was transported to Upstate Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Rashid was treated at the scene.

    The investigation is ongoing.
