OWEGO, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A group of active and retired firefighters in Owego is being recognized for their commitment to preserving the village’s history.

The Owego Hose Team was selected by the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce for its monthly non-profit spotlight.

The team is a separate 501-C3 from the fire department and routinely participates in so-called firematics competitions with members of other fire departments in contests involving fire hoses and ladders. The competitions also serve as a way to improve firefighter training.

Today’s recognition took place in the nearly completed Steamer House on North Avenue that the Hose Team raised money for.

President Lou Striley says the organization still needs to raise about $20,000 more in order to install pavers and benches and improve the sidewalk in front of the exhibit building. Once finished, the building will house an 1866 Amoskeag Steam Fire Engine that is currently being refurbished in the State of Maine.

This project comes on the heels of the Hose Team’s project to renovate the historic Baker Fireman’s Fountain next to the courthouse.

“There’s a lot of pride in the Owego Fire Department. We want to preserve the history of the Owego Fire Department. After we got that done, which was probably a few years project too, we started this one because we want to preserve history,” said Striley.

The Owego Hose Team ceremonially lit its eternal light in front of the Steamer House today.

So far, nearly $350,000 has been raised and spent on the Steamer House and Amoskeag repair.
