Tri-Cities Opera kicks of 75th season with LUMA inspired show

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Tri-Cities Opera is starting its 75th anniversary season with a special performance during the LUMA Festival that incorporates projection arts.

Members of the TCO cast were rehearsing Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” yesterday at the Opera Center on Clinton Street.

Tri-Cities commissioned a new hour-long English language version of the classic tale of a prince who goes on a quest to rescue a princess. The production features all four of the opera company’s resident artists, some Binghamton University voice students and three guest artists, including a pair of TCO alums. It will be accompanied by a full orchestra with lush costumes but rather than a set, the action will take place in front of and behind a screen featuring projections.

“The projections are these beautiful painted images that interact with the characters as they are on the stage. It really is a wonderful synthesis of technology and storytelling which is a big focus of the LUMA Festival,” said Rozzoni.

There will be two performances at the Forum Theater in downtown Binghamton.

The first, Friday September 6 at 7:30, coincides with LUMA and will end just as the projections arts festival is beginning. The second will be a Sunday matinee at 3.

Tickets for Friday are $10, $20 for Sunday and children 18 and under are free.
