TOWN OF UNION, NY (WIVT/WBGH) — A laundry room dispute Monday in a Town of Union apartment complex led to one man getting stabbed and one arrested on assault charges, according to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.

On Labor Day, Monday, September 2, at around 6 p.m., the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol responded to a 9-1-1 call for a man that had been stabbed in the chest at an apartment complex on 207 Bornt Hill Road in Union.

When police arrived, the man was found lying on the ground in the apartment complex parking lot with two people providing him with first aid. Deputies on the scene applied direct pressure to the wound and used a chest seal as necessary life-saving measures until an ambulance arrived to the complex.

The man was taken to UHS Wilson Hospital and is still in “serious” condition at the time of reporting, according to BCSO. Witnesses indicated the one who stabbed the man was 32-year-old Janzer Canelo, of Endicott, due to a known ongoing feud between Canelo and the man over laundry in the apartment complex they both reside at.

According to police, the situation occurred around 6 p.m. in the laundry room where the altercation turned physical, and eventually violent where the victim was stabbed in the chest with a knife. All information is based on witness testimony at this time.

After investigating, BCSO arrested and charged Canelo with Assault in the First Degree, with intent to cause serious injury with a weapon. Canelo was taken to Central Arraignment and remains in custody at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility.

“Excellent work by our responding deputies, who took immediate, lifesaving measures until
EMS arrived and helped save the life of the victim of this senseless crime,” said Sheriff Fred
    Akshar.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the New York State Police, Endicott
Police, Union Volunteer Emergency Squad and the Broome Volunteer Emergency Squad.
