(WIVT/WBGH) – A local grassroots organization dedicated to supporting people with autism and their families is holding the first major fundraiser in its existence.

Advocates for Autism is holding an Irish-themed event on September 21 to mark the halfway point to Saint Patrick’s Day.

The central focus is a raffle in which a $100 ticket gets buyers a chance to win $10,000.

Advocates for Autism grew out of the local chapter of the Autism Society of America back in 2007. It’s a parent-led, all volunteer organization that assists families with financial and future needs planning, referrals to health care and information about other local services.

Advocates for Autism also organizes social events for people with autism and advocates for research and solutions.

Founder and CEO Sally Colletti’s 31-year-old son was diagnosed at 6 months old. She says it’s been a long and challenging journey to secure the services and supports her son needs. And Colletti is available to answer email questions from concerned parents with a new diagnosis.

“I answer every person’s desperate questions. Usually a parent, when they’re asking me a question, they don’t want to wait until the next day when someone opens the office. They’re going to be up all-night thinking, ‘What is the answer to that question?’ I just remember what it feels like for those very first days. It was devastating to hear that diagnosis, absolutely devastating,” said Colletti.

Colletti says her son is now living a well-rounded life with a part-time job and a close circle of friends.

The fundraiser takes place on Saturday September 21 at Irish Kevin’s on Riverside Drive in Johnson City from 2 to 5 p.m.

A $100 raffle ticket purchase is required to attend, with a 1 in 300 chance to win $10,000. Second through fifth place will split another $5,000. There will also be several raffle baskets available.

The party at Irish Kevin’s will include food, drinks and live music.
