    FAYETTEVILLE, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – This week’s destination is a scientific wonder.

It’s a nationally known sports venue, it’s a major tourist attraction and it’s also one of the most tranquil spots in Central New York.

Destination New York’s Tim Fox takes us to Green Lakes State Park.

Nestled in a mile long gorge in the heart of Central New York, Green Lakes State Park can hardly be called a hidden gem. The park was built in the mid-1920’s, Over the last hundred years, it’s become a top choice for camping and hiking and canoeing, and winter sports as well. About one-point-eight million people make their way here from all over the globe each year

Carved out of the earth by glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age, more than 15-thousand years ago. It’s unique make-up makes this tourist spot perhaps the most studied lake of its kind anywhere in the world.

It’s a meromictic lake, meaning there are multiple layers in the lake that don’t seasonally turn over or mix like other lakes or ponds do. Because of that, it’s really clear. So, when the sun goes in, it bounces back out of the water. That’s when you see that really pretty blue/green.

There are a lot of exhibits. We have our fish tank. All the fish were caught right off the dock. It’s a great place for people to come, ask questions, just look around.

But the State Park is only half the story. It shares the grounds with one of the most beautiful golf courses you’ll find in Central New York. The 18-hole course opened in 1936… one of the first designed by legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr.

For the price and what they’re getting quality-wise, it’s become a destination golf course. Visiting pros call it a fun course to play. But the rolling terrain makes it a real challenge for amateurs. The slope on the greens also makes the greens very tough to putt.

Since it’s a state-owned course, the prices are affordable. But make your plans early. Tee times go fast.
