(WIVT/WBGH) – September is Hunger Action Month, and the demand for healthy, accessible foods is higher than ever.

The latest data from Feeding America says the number of people living food insecure in America has increased to 44 million, including 13 million children.

The data shows that one in seven people in New York State are food insecure.

The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is using Hunger Action Month, as a way to spread awareness and raise funds to fight food insecurity.

The President and CEO, Mark Bordeau says new data show one in five children in Binghamton don’t have sufficient food.

“We’re trying to educate folks that you need food to survive. Without healthy food, it can impact your health, education, really every aspect of your life can be impacted positively or negatively, depending on the food, or lack of food that you have access to,” said Bordeau.

He says one of the best ways to participate in Hunger Action Month is by volunteering and posting on social media to spread the word.
