TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Flu season is upon us and the Tioga County Public Health Department is encouraging everyone over the age of six months old to get their preventative flu shot.

Typical flu season begins in October and ends around May. The flu shot is offered at a variety of locations including doctor’s offices and pharmacies. According to the Health Department, annual flu vaccination is recommended because the virus can change yearly. The flu shot covers three strains of seasonal flu.

The Health Department says It it takes around two weeks for antibodies to develop and provide maximum protection against the flu. You will not get the flu from getting the flu vaccine. However, you can still get the virus while antibodies continue to develop and even after you have full protection from the vaccine. Even though contracting the flu is still possible while vaccinated, the flu shot reduces the severity of the illness.

Children, pregnant women, and older adults are more vulnerable to severe illness related to the flu and should speak with their primary care provider about the best course of action regarding the flu vaccine and timing of vaccination in order to provide the most protection. Farm workers are strongly encouraged to get their flu shot this year, especially due to the circulating bird flu affecting dairy and poultry.

The ideal time to get vaccinated is in September and October due to protection from the vaccine waning throughout the season.

If you have specific questions or concerns about receiving a flu shot, talk with your healthcare provider.
