Kopernik’s 50th anniversary Gala

BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – Kopernik Observatory is celebrating 50 years in our community, and next month, it’s hosting a party to kickoff the next half century.

The executive director of Kopernik, Drew Deskur, was invited to present to the Binghamton Noon Rotary Club about the observatory’s 50th anniversary, and its plans for a 50th Gala on October 5th.

Deskur says the gala will be at the DoubleTree Hotel in Downtown Binghamton, and will feature some of Kopernik’s founding members, and some people who started as interns, and ended up as college professors.

He says they’re planning ahead to make the next 50 years bigger than ever.

“Where we’ve been, and also, where we’re headed now. Now that we’ve started our next 50 years, we’ve got a pretty major capital campaign that we’re trying to roll out. So, we’ll be giving them a little bit of a sneak peak of that,” says Deskur.

Deskur says the keynote speaker for the gala will be Noble Prize-winning professor at Binghamton University, Stan Whittingham.
