BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The new Battery New York facility in Johnson City, next to Walmart, says it will soon have the capabilities of a giga-factory, on a more localized scale.

The executive director of Battery NY, Paul Malliband, presented to the Binghamton University Forum about the status of the Johnson City manufacturing plant. He says it will become a first-of-its-kind research and development prototyping center, for businesses to create sustainable battery technology.

Malliband says there’s three steps to manufacturing a battery. First, you produce the electrode, then, assemble a cell, and third, bring it to life.

He says the new facility has the equipment to do all of that.

“The facility we’re building doesn’t exist anywhere else. I would say not even outside the U.S. In the role that I’m in now, and in my former role, we were always having inquiries for a sort of scale of manufacturing that we’re working on now. So, this is really critical, and I would really like to hope this avoids companies going overseas to do this work,” said Malliband.

The 23,000 square foot facility was originally a Gannett printing press.

He says the battery industry is in such demand right now, that some of the equipment could take 12 to 14 months to get here.
