BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Binghamton High School teacher is being recognized for his achievements thanks to efforts of a former student.

Taylor Weigand is a social studies teacher who instructs seniors in International Baccalaureate and SUNY Broome Fast Forward courses.

He got a pleasant surprise on the first day of school this year when he found out that he had won the prestigious 2024 Yale Educator Award.

The award is given to teachers nominated by incoming Yale freshmen.

Weigand says his two goals as an educator are to teach at a high level while also meeting students where they’re at.

“The most meaningful thing is that it comes from a student as opposed to anywhere else. Knowing that it comes from the kids in my room is what really makes it special,” said Weigand.

Weigand was nominated by Ted Clarke. He says the two bonded not only over their shared love of American history, but also an interest in hiking and rock climbing.

Weigand was one of 75 teachers selected out of 320 nominees.
