    UPDATE: Fugitive wanted for murder arrested at SUNY Broome campus

    Update: SUNY Broome has released a statement on behalf of the college regarding the arrest.

    SUNY Broome says its Office of Public Safety worked closely with the Sheriff’s Office to take Astrel into custody. According to SUNY Broome, Astrel was currently registered on a part-time basis

    SUNY Broome says college operations were not impacted and at no point was there a threat to students or staff.


    TOWN OF DICKINSON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Binghamton man wanted for murder in Georgia has been arrested in the Town of Dickinson.

    Late last week, members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office received information that Dawensley Astrel, 21, had an active arrest warrant out of the state of Georgia for Murder.

    The Sheriff’s Office determined that Astrel was in the Binghamton area due to his enrollment as a student at SUNY Broome.

    A team from BCSO partnered with SUNY Broome Campus Safety to take Astrel into custody without incident while he was on campus on Monday.

    According to the Sheriff’s Office, Astrel will be extradited by law enforcement from Georgia to answer for his charges..

    “More excellent police work by our Warrants Division in bringing this wanted individual to justice,” said Akshar. “Thank you to SUNY Broome’s Campus Safety team for their partnership in safely removing this fugitive from their campus.”

    I wish the SUNY schools would quit accepting criminals from outside of the area. BU has certainly had their share. Who can forget Miladin Kovacevik?
