BINGHAMTON, NY – (WIVT/WBGH) Public works crews from Binghamton were busy Tuesday cleaning up a mountain of trash from a homeless encampment.

D-P-W was along the river walk behind the Binghamton Plaza clearing out several locations filled with old mattresses, boxes and assorted other debris.

Workers tell News 34 that they average about 2 of these cleanups a week in the city and that they often encounter syringes and other drug paraphernalia. Witnesses say one encampment down next to the Chenango River included a camper.

Council passes update to human rights legislation

According to the Mayor’s Office, Binghamton Police visited the sites multiple times last week encouraging the inhabitants to vacate. It follows another massive cleanup along Robinson Street in recent times.

The Mayor’s Office says such encampments are unsafe and unsanitary and are taking up a lot of time and resources for both the police and public works.

look back in the woods by Robinson St where the bridge goes over. The crossing guard parks there. There are tents in there. you can ask them to vacate but where are they going to go? To another spot . it cures nothing.
