    Nobel Prize winning BU professor to speak at Kopernik’s 50th Anniversary Gala

    VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A distinguished Binghamton University professor will discuss his impressive career and the importance of scientific advancement as Kopernik Observatory and Science Center celebrates an important milestone.

    Stanley Whittingham was named as the keynote speaker for Kopernik’s 50th Anniversary Gala .

    Whittingham is credited with inventing the lithium-ion battery, going on to win the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2019. He is currently heading Binghamton University’s New Energy New York Coalition which has developed a host of innovative programs to support the growth of the battery and energy storage manufacturing industry in Upstate New York. Whittingham was also recommended for knighthood by King Charles, signifying the importance of his work on the world of science.

    Kopernik’s 50th Anniversary Gala will be held on October 5 at the DoubleTree in Binghamton. There will be several exhibitions and displays, a dinner, and presentations celebrating the growth of the science center.

    The event will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m.
