BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The first legal marijuana dispensary in Upstate New York is taking steps to fulfill its commitment to support those struggling in our community.

Just Breathe on Court Street in downtown Binghamton has launched a new non-profit Just Breathe Tomorrows.

CEO Damien Cornwell says the organization has received $25,000 in seed money from cannabis sales to get it started.

Cornwell says its initial focus will be on supporting single parents and reducing recidivism.

Just Breathe Tomorrows will raise money from other cannabis businesses and local non-cannabis donors and make grants to existing non-profits to support their existing programs. That includes money for Urban League childcare programs and the Hope Foundation’s work to assist people in recovery.

“The cannabis industry is an evolving industry in the sense that it can make a lot of money quickly. Without some direction, without some anchoring in the community, I think it would be a mistake not to position those different businesses in a way that ca help serve our communities as a whole,” said Cornwell.

Just Breathe Tomorrows is hosting a golf fundraiser on Saturday titled Fairways of Hope. It takes place at the Links at Hiawatha.
