BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A controversial figure from Greater Binghamton‘s past made a visit to our area Tuesday as a candidate for president.

Anti-abortion activist and Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry held a news conference outside Binghamton City Hall Tuesday morning as he campaigns against Proposition 1 on the New York State ballot.

Terry is currently the Constitution Party candidate for president. He is traveling with his vice-presidential candidate Stephen Broden, who is a Black pastor from Dallas, Texas.

Terry plans to start airing television ads opposing Prop 1 in New York markets that include graphic and disturbing images of what are presented as aborted fetuses.

Terry says that because he is a candidate for president, federal election law requires that stations air his advertisements without editing or censorship, despite the challenging imagery.

“Imagine trying to fight anti-Semitism without showing pictures of dead bodies in Auschwitz. Imagine trying to fight segregation without showing Emmett Till’s body or the dogs and the water cannons, or the Black men hung by the Ku Klux Klan. It’s impossible. In every social revolution in America, incendiary images were used and that’s what we’re doing,” said Terry.

Terry says social movements, including civil rights and anti-Nazism, have long used difficult pictures to sway public opinion and work for change.

Terry and Broden are traveling on a bus emblazoned with the slogan “Defeat the Democrat Party.”

Terry acknowledges that his top goals are to defeat Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, as well as a number of abortion rights referenda on state ballots.

Terry says that while Prop 1, which would in shrine abortion access in the New York state Constitution, likely won’t make much impact on the availability of abortion in New York, he is vehemently opposed to the measure because he says it would allow minors to receive transgender medical procedures without their parents’ consent.

Terry was in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse on Monday and plans to also visit Albany and New York City.  He did not qualify for the ballot in New York State but will be on the ballot in 12 states.
