CHENANGO FORKS, NY (WIVT/WBGH) — Students at Chenango Forks have been in wood shop, making their own ukuleles from scratch, that they will eventually learn to play.

Spearheaded by the district’s music department, the hands on project gives the middle schoolers a deeper dive into music, and something that they will be able to keep with them for the rest of their lives.

The students are doing everything from sanding down the wood, using wood glue and epoxy, and eventually, staining it, and attaching the strings. One student, Zachary Tobias says the project has been a lot of fun, and he plans on crafting more instruments in the future.

“You get to make it, you get to play it yourself, like he said. And, if you want to, you can sell it for money and stuff. Its more experience and better if you make it yourself because you get the width of what’s happening and how to make it. If you get the width of it, you might be able to make your own when you get home,” Tobias said.

After all of the ukuleles are done, the students will then transition into the band room, to learn some basic chords, and songs to play on it.
