BROOM COUNTY (WIVT/WBGH) — About 600 students got to operate heavy equipment and machinery and test out their skills at BOCES’ Construction Career Day.

Last week, students got their hands dirty, and were able to get in the drivers seat of machines like bulldozers, excavators, and dump trucks. The event took place at Broome County’s Highways Department facility in Chenango Bridge.

The Principle of BOCES’ Career Development Center, Steve Moschak says not too many high school students get the opportunity to test drive real industry equipment.

“It’s an opportunity for close to 600 students from throughout Broome and Tioga county to explore the trades and construction and technology. Students have the opportunity to do a lot of hands on activities,” Moschak said.

The program is open to BOCES students grades 9 through 12. There were also organizations tabling, with displays and information about their jobs, and the education needed to get into their industry.
