Broncos win big in week two

Coming off a narrow 42-39 victory at home over Hillsboro in week one on the gridiron, the Western Brown Broncos rose to an overall record of 2-0 with a 56-22 win over Washington Courthouse on Aug. 30.

Backed by a solid defense and a fierce air attack, the Broncos got off to a 42-16 lead in the first half and never looked back.

They went on to outscore Washington Courthouse 14-6 in the second half for the 34-point victory.

Western Brown’s senior quarterback, Brady Sutton, had another big night of passing, throwing for 338 yards with five touchdowns. He completed 26-of-43 attempts with two interceptions.

Sutton dished out passes to several Bronco receivers, a night in which five different receivers came through with touchdown receptions.

Junior Elijah Valdez totaled 84 receiving yards with six receptions, scoring one touchdown.

Senior Lucas Powell hauled in eight receptions for 71 yards.

Bronco senior Austin Sandefur had four receptions for a total of 48 yards and one touchdown.

Junior Justin Morgan had one touchdown reception and totaled 53 years off three receptions.

Junior Brayden Harmon had three receptions for 58 total receiving yards, scoring one touchdown.

Sophomore Adam Pena had one reception that was a nine-yard touchdown, and senior Jayden Parker had one reception for 15 yards.

The Broncos rushed for only 72 yards as a team, but totaled 338 yards in the air.

Playing a huge role in the Broncos’ week two win was the defense.

Junior defensive back Zaiden Nichols had three interceptions, while Valdez and Morgan each had one interception.

Pena and junior Lamar Hall had fumble recoveries.

Broncos’ junior linebacker Tye Spaulding had 13 tackles in the week two win with 12 of them solo tackles and one sack.

Senior lineman Denver Ballou had seven tackles with 2.5 sacks.

The Broncos are scheduled to host Chillicothe for a non-league game on Sept. 6, heading into week three with a 2-0 record.
