"‘YOU KILLED OUR BABIES’: Court documents unveil text messages between Indiana couple

WHEATFIELD, Ind. — Recent court documents detail how a night of drinking reportedly prompted a man to confess to the murder of two of his children in northern Indiana.

Steven Valle and Samantha Sebella are currently being held without bond on murder suspicions. Prosecutors have submitted probable cause documents but are seeking additional time before formally charging either individual.

Police say the investigation began after the couple had an argument regarding Sebella's alleged methamphetamine use. Valle then stayed with a friend in Wheatfield for a few days, during which he reportedly made a shocking confession while drinking with that friend.

"I killed two of my kids," Valle allegedly said. "I burnt them in the fire pit at my house."

he friend informed police that after hearing Valle's confession, he asked additional questions, and Valle claimed that he and Sebella had "smothered their first born but had drowned the second born and burnt their bodies in the fire pit at their house."

The friend stated that Sebella attempted to call Valle, but he did not answer. When the friend texted her, she reportedly told him that "Steven burnt my babies."

After the friend reached out to the police, officers located the couple at a motel in Kentland, Indiana, approximately an hour southwest of Wheatfield. They were staying there with their 4-year-old son, who was born at home and had not received a birth certificate or social security number.

The couple reportedly denied ever having any other children at home, as well as any miscarriages or stillbirths. Police also confiscated the couple's phones.

Police then went to the couple's former residence, where a new tenant was living. The tenant granted them permission to search the property. Using cadaver dogs, officers received positive alerts at multiple locations. An anthropologist from the University of Indianapolis subsequently identified bone fragments at each site.

Police obtained a search warrant to examine the couple's phones. According to court documents, they discovered several incriminating messages. Detectives suspect that during multiple exchanges, a friend of Valle's named Alex was texting with Sebella using his phone.

Police noted that Sebella kept records of multiple pregnancies through the "Baby Center" app on her phone, with the dates reportedly included in her Google Calendar.

Using that information, police confronted Valle on October 3 with their findings. According to police, Valle then admitted that Sebella had given birth to a male child in 2018. He stated that he returned home to find Sebella unconscious with the child between her legs and claimed that the baby was not breathing.

Valle told police that he cleaned the boy to make him look "pretty," then wrapped him in a blanket and placed him in a box. According to police, "Steven said that after three days, he realized the child wouldn't be coming back to life, so he wrapped him completely in the blanket and buried him in the backyard near a shed."

Police say Valle claimed that Sebella had a premature baby girl "some time after the male child had died." He stated that Sebella told him she had given birth in the bathtub, and he later buried the baby next to the boy.

Investigators report that Valle admitted the children had been buried for 3 to 5 years before he dug them up and burned them in a fire pit. He alleged that he sifted through the ashes and "kept some of the ashes to make a necklace as a memento."

Police noted that the couple admitted to physically battering each other.

On October 4, prosecutors filed the probable cause documents and requested an extension before formally charging them. Those charges are expected to be filed by Wednesday, October 9, at the latest.
