    Marblehead church to host HALUPKI Festival

    MARBLEHEAD - Village folks and visitors will soon smell the cabbage rolls a-cookin’ and hear the lively sounds of polka music at the big 67th Annual HALUPKI Festival www.holyassumptionmarblehead.org .

    The HALUPKI Festival, a celebration of Carpatho-Russian foods and culture, is presented annually on the third Sunday of August by Holy Assumption Orthodox Church, 114 East Main St. (Ohio 163). This year’s event takesplace from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18.

    Festival kicks off with church services, singing

    The day’s activities begin at 10 am. with worship at Divine Liturgy in the historic church. The choir of SS.Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Lorain will sing at Liturgy. The public is welcome.

    The festival begins at 11:30 a.m. with the serving of their Carpatho-Russian dinner of two halupki, two perohi, kolbasi, roll and butter, and baklava for dessert.

    At 2 p.m., the Eastern European Ala Carte will open, featuring halupki (cabbage rolls), perohi (pierogies), halushki (cabbage and noodles), kolbasi (smoked sausage), spanakopita (spinach pie). and much more.

    Ethnic foods will include kolach and baklava

    Delicious Old World-Style baked goods, including nut and poppy seed rolls (kolach, or koh-LAHCH), as well asbaklava, will be sold.

    Live entertainment gets underway at noon with polka music by the Frank Moravcik Orchestra and theCulkar-Golob Band, both of Cleveland, alternating every hour throughout the afternoon.

    The parish church, the oldest Orthodox church in Ohio and a historic landmark, will be open for tours.

    Orthodox religious items will be for sale. A demonstration of the Rusyn art of Pysanky (pih-SAHN-key), or Easter eggdecorating, will be given by local artist Helen Jean Cooley. Herman Halupki’s Craft Fest, with over 20 vendors, will be onthe lawn during the festival. Fun for the kids includes a bounce/slide, a rock wall for climbing, and face painting bySunshine Expressions. Refreshments and raffles complete the offerings.

    The HALUPKI Festival is held on the parish grounds of Holy Assumption Orthodox Church; look for “the little stonechurch with the golden domes”. Admission to the festival is absolutely free. There is ample free parking ineasy walking distance, and a shuttle bus running between parking areas and the festival grounds.
