Motion to dismiss ruling in County, Lenoir City suit expected soon
A recent court hearing for motions to dismiss a Loudon County lawsuit against Lenoir City and two other defendants ended without a ruling, but it’s expected to come before the month’s end. The lawsuit argues that the city’s disputed annexations of two unincorporated properties, starting in 2020, didn’t follow state law and weren’t approved by Loudon County Commission as required by a 2005 inter-local agreement between the city and county. Cowboys sign DB Gareon Conley, LB Willie Harvey
The Dallas Cowboys signed linebacker Willie Harvey and cornerback Gareon Conley on Tuesday. Both played in the UFL in 2024, Harvey with the St. Louis BattleHawks and Conley with the DC Defenders. Harvey, 28, led the league with 78 tackles in 10 games and made the inaugural All-UFL team. Undrafted in 2019, he appeared in two games for the Cleveland Browns in 2019 and two more in 2021. Conley, 28, was a first-round pick (24th overall) by the then-Oakland Raiders in 2017. He had 94 tackles and four interceptions in 31 games (26 starts) with the Raiders (2017-19) and Houston Texans (2019). --Field Level Media

Report: Steelers to release WR Denzel Mims
The Pittsburgh Steelers are releasing wide receiver Denzel Mims, NFL Network reported on Tuesday. Mims was signed by the Steelers on Oct. 3 and placed on their practice squad. He remained there throughout the rest of the season and signed a reserve/futures deal on Jan. 17. Mims, 26, has totaled 42 catches for 676 yards in 30 career games (15 starts) with the New York Jets. BYU lands four-star SF Kanon Catchings
Four-star small forward Kanon Catchings, the No. 38 recruit in the 2024 class per 247 Sports and a projected 2025 NBA lottery pick, committed to BYU on Tuesday. Lions sign UFL K Jake Bates
The Detroit Lions signed Jake Bates from the United Football League and waived fellow kicker James Turner on Tuesday. Bates spent the spring with the Michigan Panthers and made 21 of 28 field goals, including a 64-yard attempt and two others of at least 60 yards. He also made visits to the Washington Commanders and Green Bay Packers but chose to say in Detroit, where he kicked at Ford Field for the Panthers. The Lions currently employ veteran kicker Michael Badgley. Badgley, who turns 29 next month, spent parts of the past two seasons with the Lions, his fifth team. In 16 regular-season games with Detroit, Badgley has made 24 of 28 field goal attempts with a long of 53. Bates, 25, played his senior season in 2022 at Arkansas, where he was a kickoff specialist and didn't attempt field goals. He was named to All-SEC first-team after leading the conference with an average of 64.47 yards per kickoff. The wide receiver posted a TikTok video on Monday of a FaceTime call he had with rookie Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. Les Miles sues LSU for vacating wins, costing him HOF
Former longtime LSU coach Les Miles filed a lawsuit against the school for vacating 37 wins as part of self-imposed punishment that sunk his chance to qualify for the College Football Hall of Fame. In a release on Monday, Miles said the decision was "irrational and unfair self-inflicted punishment." LSU announced last June it was vacating wins from 2012 to 2015 over recruiting violations regarding former player Vadal Alexander.
