PITTSBURGH, PA - According to information from Penn State University, Central Pennsylvania's Lock Haven Formation, a seemingly ordinary outcropping of gray shale and sandstone, offers a glimpse into a time when much of the region was submerged underwater.

According to Penn State University, ating back to the Devonian Period, around 400 million years ago, this formation reveals that Pennsylvania and much of the East Coast were once covered by shallow seas.

During this era, the seas were home to armored fish, sea scorpions, and squid-like creatures encased in armor.

The seafloor teemed with ancient sponges, early clams, snails, and corals, creating a vastly different marine environment than today's waters off New Jersey and New York, according to Penn State University.

Studying these rocks allows geologists to reconstruct this ancient ecosystem.

Recent fieldwork by Penn State in 2021 uncovered clam fossils, ichnofossils—ancient burrow traces—and signs of underwater landslides, offering valuable insights into Earth's dynamic history and the prehistoric life that once thrived in these ancient seas.
