    Tornado Confirmed in Eastern Panhandle

    MARTINSBURG, WV - A confirmed tornado touched down in Hedgesville, Berkeley County, West Virginia, on the night of August 8, 2024.

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Baltimore/Washington Forecast Office, in collaboration with Berkeley County Emergency Management, conducted a survey of the damage left in its wake.

    According to the National Weather Service, the tornado, classified as an EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, had estimated peak winds of 80 mph.

    According to the National Weather Service, the brief but intense tornado struck around 11:50 PM EDT, first making its presence known near the intersection of Wampum Lane and Lodge Road.

    Here, a large tree was uprooted, and several branches were snapped off.

    The tornado continued its path to the northeast, causing most of the damage along Brumbaugh Lane at approximately 11:51 PM EDT, according to the National Weather Service.

    Several more trees were uprooted, some snapped midway up, and numerous large branches were scattered across the area.

    The tornado's path was short, measuring only 0.3 miles in length with a maximum width of 150 yards.

    Fortunately, there were no fatalities or injuries reported as a result of the storm.

    The NWS expressed gratitude to the Berkeley County Office of Emergency Management for their assistance in conducting the survey.
