CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - A routine stop for truck driver Steven Miller turned into a life-changing moment when he discovered he had won the $150,000 top prize on a Virginia Lottery Skee-Ball scratcher ticket.

According to a press release issued by the Virginia Lottery on Thursday, August 15, 2024, Miller, who lives in Goodview, purchased the ticket at Petro Glade Spring on Maple Street while on his way to Kansas. Unaware of his good fortune, he tucked the ticket away without scratching it.

A few days later, Miller finally scratched the ticket and was stunned to see that he had won the top prize. Overcome with excitement, he immediately verified the win several times before sharing the news with his wife.

According to the Virginia Lottery, the Skee-Ball scratcher is one of many games offered by the Virginia Lottery, featuring prizes ranging from $5 to $150,000. This is the first top prize claimed in the game, leaving two more top prizes unclaimed.

The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,346,400, while the chances of winning any prize are 1 in 3.94.

Miller plans to use his winnings to start a treatment facility to help people struggling with drug and alcohol addictions.

All profits from the Virginia Lottery go toward K-12 education in the state. Last fiscal year, Bedford County, where Miller resides, received over $6.8 million in Lottery funds for education.

In Fiscal Year 2024, the Lottery contributed more than $934 million to K-12 education, accounting for about 10 percent of the state's total school budget, according to the Virginia Lottery.
