NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The new Newport News Transportation Center officially opened on August 22, marking a significant improvement in transportation infrastructure for the Hampton Roads region.

This state-of-the-art facility, located at 500-B Bland Blvd., is set to enhance travel for Amtrak Virginia passengers and regional bus system users.

According to a press release from Amtrak, the multimodal project is the result of a collaboration between Amtrak, the city of Newport News, the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), CSX, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), among others.

“This opening is a significant milestone in our efforts to improve our service, trains, stations, and amenities to provide customers with an exceptional experience,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris. The center will serve as a key hub for two daily Amtrak Virginia roundtrips between Newport News, Richmond, Alexandria, Washington, D.C., and cities along the Northeast Corridor.

According to the press release, in addition to Amtrak services, the Newport News Transportation Center will function as a transfer point for Amtrak Thruway Bus Service, extending travel options to Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

The facility also connects passengers with Hampton Roads Transit, taxi services, and shuttles to and from the Newport News-Williamsburg Airport.

With a 3,450-square-foot waiting area, state-of-the-art Passenger Information Display System (PIDS), and fully accessible pathways and platforms, the center is designed to provide a modern, convenient, and accessible travel experience. The facility also includes a new maintenance facility where trains will be serviced and cleaned, according to the press release.

City officials and partners in the project celebrated the center's opening as a landmark achievement in regional transportation. “The Newport News Transportation Center is a shining example of the future of passenger rail in Virginia,” said DJ Stadtler, Executive Director of VPRA.

U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine praised the project, highlighting its role in boosting regional connectivity and supporting public transportation across the country.

The center’s development was supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, with Senator Kaine securing $1.2 million in congressionally directed spending for the project.

As the Newport News Transportation Center opens its doors, it promises to be a vital hub for residents and travelers, reflecting a commitment to enhancing transportation access and infrastructure in Virginia.
