CHARLESTON, WV - The disappearance of the Sodder children remains one of West Virginia's most enduring mysteries, still unsolved nearly 80 years after the tragic event.

On Christmas Eve 1945, a fire broke out at the Sodder family home in Fayetteville, West Virginia. George and Jennie Sodder, along with nine of their ten children, were inside the house when the blaze began.

According to Smithsonian Magazine, while four children escaped with their parents, five of the children—Maurice, 14; Martha, 12; Louis, 9; Jennie, 8; and Betty, 5—were presumed dead in the fire. However, no remains were ever found.

Theories about what happened to the Sodder children have persisted over the decades.

Some believe the children were kidnapped and that the fire was set deliberately as a diversion.

In a now-viral YouTube video posted by MysteriousWV, Suspicious circumstances, such as a missing ladder, a cut phone line, and a malfunctioning truck, have fueled speculation that the fire was not an accident.

According to reporting from the HuffPost, a photograph of a young man, sent anonymously to the Sodder family in 1967, bore a striking resemblance to their son Louis, leading some to believe that at least one of the children survived.

Despite numerous investigations and the family's relentless search for answers, the fate of the Sodder children remains a mystery.

The case has captivated generations, with many still wondering what really happened that fateful night.

The Sodder children's disappearance is a haunting reminder of the unresolved mysteries that continue to puzzle both authorities and the public.

Drugs weren't an issue back then. Get real. They just wanted their children. That was 80yrs ago. I don't think they will ever find out now.
