Wolf Sightings Reported in Pennsylvania Despite Said Extinction

    2024-08-26

ALTOONA, PA - Wolves were once a significant presence in Pennsylvania, playing a crucial role in the state's ecosystem.

Historically, the eastern timber wolf, also known as the gray wolf, roamed the forests and mountains of Pennsylvania. These predators were essential in maintaining the balance of the region's wildlife by keeping populations of deer and other prey in check.

According to the Timber Wolf Information Network, however, as European settlers expanded across Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, the wolves' numbers began to decline sharply.

According to the Timber Wolf Information Network, due to fears of livestock attacks and competition for game, settlers hunted wolves extensively. By the late 1800s, wolves were effectively eradicated from Pennsylvania, with the last known wolf in the state killed in 1892.

Despite their extinction in the region, occasional reports of wolf sightings still emerge. Some of these sightings could be attributed to large coyotes or wolf-dog hybrids, according to the Timber Wolf Information Network.

However, others suggest the possibility of wolves wandering into Pennsylvania from nearby states where they have been reintroduced or from the wild populations in Canada. While the presence of wolves in Pennsylvania remains unconfirmed, these sightings keep the possibility alive in the minds of residents.

They said that coyotes didn’t live in the state 20 years ago also, while local hunting clubs were having derby’s hunting them down. Now look how many of them we have now. So the PA game commission, or whatever agency, introducing wolves does not surprise me. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
