MADISON, WI - Black bears are thriving in 37 states across the U.S., with populations ranging from a few isolated sightings to well-established communities.

According to World Population Review, while not endangered, black bears face challenges such as overpopulation and the risk of being mistaken for smaller grizzly bears, leading to unintended hunting incidents.

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service currently does not classify black bears as endangered, but managing their growing numbers remains a concern in many states.

According to World Population Review, Wisconsin is home to one of the country’s largest black bear populations, estimated at 24,000 bears.

The state's dense forests and abundant food sources provide an ideal habitat for these animals. Other states with significant black bear populations include Alaska, which has the highest at 100,000, followed by California and Maine, each with around 35,000.

However, some states, like Delaware, Hawaii, and most of the Midwest, have no black bear populations due to habitat loss or climate unsuitability, according to World Population Review.

Conservation efforts continue to focus on maintaining bear populations while minimizing human-bear conflicts, ensuring that these majestic animals remain a thriving part of America's wildlife landscape.
