Mountain Lion Sightings Reported in Rhode Island Despite Said Extinction

    2024-08-31

CRANSTON, RI - Mountain lions, also known as cougars or pumas, have been officially extinct in Rhode Island for over a century, but reported sightings continue to intrigue and baffle residents.

According to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, the last confirmed presence of mountain lions in the state dates back to the 19th century when deforestation and hunting drove the species to extinction in the region.

Despite their official status as extirpated, occasional sightings of these elusive big cats are still reported.

According to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, experts suggest that many of these sightings may be misidentifications of bobcats, which are common in Rhode Island, or even large domestic pets.

However, some believe that a small number of mountain lions may be wandering into the state from established populations in the western U.S. and Canada, as well as from rewilding efforts in neighboring states.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has not confirmed any recent evidence of mountain lions, such as tracks or photographic proof, but they continue to investigate credible reports, according to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

These sightings keep the legend of the mountain lion alive in Rhode Island, reminding residents of the state’s once-wild past.
