MANHATTAN, NY - As the anniversary of New York City's 9th Avenue train derailment approaches, residents and history enthusiasts reflect on one of the city’s most notorious transit accidents.

According to History of Railroad, the derailment occurred on September 11, 1905, on the 9th Avenue Elevated Line, marking the first and only fatal accident on the Manhattan elevated railways.

According to History of Railroad, on that fateful day, a southbound train was mistakenly routed onto a curve at high speed near 53rd Street.

The train, traveling too fast for the sharp turn, derailed, causing the lead cars to plunge off the elevated tracks and crash into the streets below. The tragic accident resulted in the deaths of 13 people and injured over 50 others.

Investigations revealed that human error was the primary cause, as the switchman failed to set the track correctly, according to History of Railroad.

The incident not only highlighted safety issues within the elevated railway system but also led to significant reforms in train operation protocols and infrastructure improvements.

As the anniversary approaches, it serves as a somber reminder of the importance of vigilance and safety in public transportation, while also commemorating the lives lost in one of New York City's early transit disasters.
