WINCHESTER, VA - The legend of Mothman, a mysterious winged creature with glowing red eyes, originated in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, in the late 1960s.

According to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, initially sighted by locals near the TNT area, an old World War II munitions site, Mothman was linked to a series of eerie encounters and is famously connected to the 1967 collapse of the Silver Bridge, which claimed 46 lives.

However, the legend of Mothman has since transcended its West Virginia roots, becoming a global phenomenon.

Reports of Mothman-like sightings have emerged from various parts of the United States and around the world.

According to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, notably, Chicago has experienced a surge in alleged Mothman sightings since 2017, with witnesses claiming to have seen a large, bat-like creature near O’Hare International Airport and the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Similar sightings have been reported in states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, and even as far away as Russia and Mexico.

Mothman has also permeated popular culture, appearing in books, movies, and TV shows, including the 2002 film “The Mothman Prophecies,” which brought international attention to the creature, according to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.

Festivals, museums, and merchandise dedicated to Mothman have further cemented its status as a cultural icon. Today, Mothman is more than a local legend—it’s a symbol of mystery and intrigue that captivates audiences worldwide.
