HAVERHILL, MA - Amtrak saw significant ridership in Massachusetts in fiscal year 2023, operating 69 trains daily across multiple routes.

The services include long-distance, state-supported, and Northeast Corridor routes, connecting key locations within the state and beyond.

According to Amtrak, among these, the Lake Shore Limited offers a long-distance option connecting Chicago to Boston via Cleveland and Buffalo. State-supported routes include the Amtrak Hartford Line, Berkshire Flyer, Downeaster, Valley Flyer, and Vermonter, all providing daily service.

The Northeast Corridor routes, including the high-speed Acela and Northeast Regional, link Boston with major cities like Washington, New York, and Philadelphia.

According to Amtrak, Amtrak trains served numerous stations across Massachusetts, with Boston South Station leading in ridership at 1,538,648 passengers.

Other busy stations included Boston Back Bay with 750,036 passengers and Route 128 in Westwood with 408,132 passengers. Smaller stations like Framingham and Holyoke saw ridership numbers of 2,144 and 2,743, respectively, according to Amtrak.

Overall, Amtrak’s Massachusetts stations accounted for a total ridership of 3,375,479 in FY 2023.

Amtrak relies on cooperation with host railroads, which are required to prioritize passenger trains over freight, though compliance and on-time performance remain challenges.

For more detailed information about individual stations and services, Amtrak maintains the Great American Stations website, offering profiles, histories, and community links for each location.
