CHATTANOOGA, TN - CSX has unveiled the latest addition to its heritage program, the CSXT 1851, an ES44AH locomotive paying tribute to the historic Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway (NC&StL).

The locomotive, the 19th unit in CSX’s heritage fleet, features a design that begins with a standard CSX cab before transitioning into the colors of the honored railway.

Its road number, 1851, reflects the year the first train ran on the Nashville and Chattanooga Railway, the original name of the line.

According to the Tennessee State Museum, founded in 1848, the Nashville and Chattanooga Railway played a crucial role during the Civil War, serving both Union and Confederate forces.

The line endured significant damage but continued expanding after the war, eventually changing its name to the Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway in 1873, according to the Tennessee State Museum.

The company’s rich history includes partnerships with other railroads, such as operating the famous Dixie Flyer, according to the Tennessee State Museum.

In addition to the heritage locomotive, NC&StL No. 576, a historic steam locomotive, is also undergoing restoration by the Nashville Steam Preservation Society, symbolizing the enduring legacy of this iconic railroad.
