CLEVELAND, OH - Starting October 1, 2024, Ohioans who receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will see an increase in their maximum allotments due to cost-of-living adjustments (COLA).

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the adjustments, which are updated annually in accordance with the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008, reflect the rising cost of living across the country.

For a family of four in Ohio, the maximum monthly SNAP benefit will rise to $975. While this increase applies to the 48 contiguous states and Washington D.C., maximum allotments vary in other regions, including Alaska and Guam. Ohio's minimum monthly SNAP benefit will remain at $23, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

In addition to allotment increases, other key figures will also be adjusted.

The shelter cap value, which impacts how much households can deduct for housing costs, will increase to $712. The asset limit for households will rise to $3,000, while those with seniors or disabled members will see an increase to $4,500, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

These changes are intended to help low-income households in Ohio better afford essential groceries as inflation impacts living expenses statewide.
